The portrait I painted of Jeanette Winterson with Billy, Silva and the black cat for the National Portrait Gallery will sadly be under wraps until 2023 when the renovations at the NPG are completed. The painting was done in several sessions when Jeanette insisted on standing for the whole duration of the sessions. She requested that the letters for l o v e or v o l e should be hidden under the ‘cabbage leaves’@nationalportraitgallery

Writing a longer post is perhaps just another form

Writing a longer post is perhaps just another form of procrastinating.. avoiding the blank canvas. Having done some sea drawings recently during my travels I realised that I see the sea through Marsden Hartley’s beautiful sea paintings of Maine where he was born and died at age sixty six....SIXTY SIX! I always have to resist the feeling of despair while painting something that has been painted so masterfully before. We can only try to paint with our unique and sincere emotional response and bear in mind that this is what keeps us sane #marsdenhartley #seascapes
